Not too out of shape
Although not for lack of trying. I barely got off the couch for a month, ate a lot of cake and pie and cookies and candy and fried things and buttery things and smoothies, but only because they’re delicious, not because they’re healthy. What I’m saying is, my diet remained the same.
Last week Iris and I signed up for the exercise room at the rec center. I found the exercise bike didn’t hurt my toe, so I closed my eyes and rode that thing around France. And there’s this Nautilus machine thingy that’s like a skiing/fixed gear bicycle hybrid, so I closed my eyes and pretended I was a skiing bike messenger in NY, dodging doors and aiming for tourists. And last, a treadmill. I got on that, wearing the aqua socks, closed my eyes, and stepped too far forward, nearly killing myself. I hate treadmills. I mean, seriously, if I have to keep my eyes open I might as well be outside.
After my brief barefoot episode a couple of days ago, I tried on the vffs and the toe felt fine in them. So we went to the greenway yesterday for a run. I stopped and walked frequently to focus on how the toe felt in the vffs with the bandaid, and everything felt pain free. After six miles of easy running, we got back to the car and I took the froggy shoe off: all good. I don’t know if the new skin is very tough or if I’m being extra light on my feet, but there was no indication of any stress to the toe at all. That’s great news.
Today was another relatively warm day, and since everything was honky dory I thought I’d head on out the door and play spot the changes from the last time I ran my local route wearing the vffs/bandaid combo. I missed being able to feel the ground, and found myself thinking that ok, my toe feels fine, but how would I be running differently if I were without the shoes? But it was great to be out and about again.
Even though I’m feeling good, I’m taking tomorrow and probably the next day off just to play it safe. I’ll be a fairweather runner until my toe is completely healed. Once I can run barefoot again, then I’ll start adding some distance.
